Dishwasher Not Draining? Causes, Safe Fixes and When to Call a Technician in Dubai
If your dishwasher is not draining, the cause is usually a blockage rather than a broken part: a clogged filter, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a choked sink connection. Start with the filter and hose checks below, which need nothing more than a towel, a cup and a soft brush. If water still sits in the tub afterwards, or the machine shows a drain error code, the drain pump or check valve is the likely culprit and it is time to call a technician.
This guide is written for Dubai homes, so it also covers the local factors (hard-water scale, heavy daily use and shared under-sink plumbing) that make drain problems more common here.
Signs your dishwasher is not draining properly
- Dirty water standing in the bottom of the tub after the cycle has finished.
- The cycle pauses, beeps or stops with a drain error code on the display.
- Gurgling from the kitchen sink, or dishwasher water backing up into the sink.
- A sour or musty smell when you open the door.
One thing that is not a fault: many dishwashers keep a small amount of clean water in the sump, the well under the filter, to keep the seals from drying out. If the water sits only below the filter and is clear, that is normal. Water above the filter, across the base of the tub, is a drain problem.
Common causes of a dishwasher not draining
1. Clogged filter
The filter sits at the bottom of the tub, under the lower spray arm, and catches food scraps, labels, seeds and broken glass before they reach the pump. Most modern machines use a manual-clean filter that needs regular rinsing. When it clogs, water cannot reach the pump fast enough and the cycle ends with water in the tub. In Dubai kitchens, rice grains, lemon and date seeds, and congealed cooking oil or ghee are the usual offenders.
2. Blocked or kinked drain hose
The ribbed drain hose runs from the pump to the plumbing under your sink. It can kink when the dishwasher is pushed back into its cabinet after cleaning or installation, and over time it can fill with grease and food sludge. A hose that runs along the cabinet floor without a high loop (raised up to the underside of the worktop before it drops to the sink connection) can also let dirty water flow back into the machine.
3. Kitchen sink trap, waste spigot or air-gap blockage
In most Dubai apartments and villas, the dishwasher drains into a spigot on the sink trap under the kitchen sink, often shared with the washing machine. If that trap is choked with grease, the dishwasher has nowhere to push its water; a sink that drains slowly or gurgles is a strong clue. On a new installation, check that the blanking cap inside the spigot (or a food waste disposer's knockout plug) was removed. Countertop air gaps are uncommon in UAE kitchens, but if you have one, its chamber can clog too.
4. Faulty drain pump
The drain pump is a small motor with a plastic impeller. A shard of glass, a fruit stone or a bone fragment can jam the impeller, and the motor itself can wear out. Typical signs are a hum with no water moving, grinding during the drain phase, or silence when the machine should be pumping out. Replacing the pump means opening the base of the machine, which is a job for a technician.
5. Stuck check valve (non-return valve)
The check valve lets water leave the machine and stops dirty water flowing back in. On many Bosch and Siemens models it is the white flap cover over the pump in the sump; on other brands it sits at the pump outlet or in the hose. If it sticks closed, water cannot leave. If it sticks open, the machine drains and then water creeps back into the tub.
6. Hard-water scale and grease build-up
Mineral scale coats the filter mesh, narrows the sump and hose, and stiffens the check valve flap. On its own, scale rarely stops a dishwasher overnight. Combined with grease, however, it forms a hard, sticky deposit that slowly reduces drain flow until the machine times out and throws an error. This is the Dubai-specific cause most homeowners overlook, and it is covered in more detail below.
Safe DIY checks before you call a technician
- Switch off the power and, if you plan to move the machine, close the water supply valve under the sink.
- Remove the standing water. Pull out the lower rack, lay towels on the floor, then bail out the water with a cup and soak up the rest with a sponge.
- Clean the filter. On most models you twist the cylinder anticlockwise and lift it out with the flat mesh. Rinse both under warm water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Avoid wire brushes and sharp tools; a damaged mesh lets debris through to the pump.
- Check the sump and pump cover. With the filter out, remove any visible debris from the sump (gloves on). On Bosch and Siemens machines you can usually unclip the white pump cover, following your user manual, and check that the impeller turns freely. Refit the cover firmly, because a loose cover can itself cause a drain error.
- Inspect the drain hose. Look under the sink for kinks or crushed sections, and make sure the hose rises in a high loop before it connects to the sink.
- Test the sink drain. Run the kitchen tap for a minute. If the sink drains slowly, put a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap, clean it out and refit it hand-tight. Clean the air gap or disposer connection too, if you have one.
- Run a short test cycle. Restore the power, run a rinse or quick program and listen during the drain phase. A hum with no water moving points to the pump. If the water drains and then comes back, suspect the check valve or the hose height.
- Descale once it drains. Use a cleaner made specifically for dishwashers. Never pour caustic drain unblockers into a dishwasher, because they can damage seals and plastic parts.
When to call a technician
DIY checks clear a lot of drain problems, but stop and book a repair if any of the following apply:
- Water is still standing after you have cleaned the filter and checked the hose and sink trap.
- The drain pump hums, grinds or stays silent when it should be pumping out.
- The same drain error code comes back after you have cleared the obvious blockages.
- Water is leaking under the machine or the anti-flood (Aquastop) protection has triggered.
- The dishwasher is fully integrated behind a kitchen door panel and would need to be pulled out of the cabinet.
- You notice a burning smell, the breaker trips, or anything suggests an electrical fault.
Our technicians test the pump, check valve and drain path at your home and fix the cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Every visit starts with an AED 150 diagnostic fee, which is credited toward your repair if you go ahead with the quote. Brand notes: drain error codes
Bosch and Siemens: E24 and E25
Bosch and Siemens share the same platform and drain codes. E24 means the machine could not pump the water out in time, usually because of a clogged filter, kinked hose or blocked sink connection. E25 points to the pump itself, typically debris trapped under the white pump cover or a cover that is not seated properly. We cover each in detail in our Bosch and Siemens E24 guide and E25 pump blockage guide. For persistent codes, see our Bosch dishwasher repair service and Siemens dishwasher repair service.
LG: OE
On LG dishwashers, OE is the drain error. Work through the same checks (filter, hose, sink trap). If the code returns with a clean filter and a clear hose, the drain pump or its wiring needs testing. More on LG faults on our LG dishwasher repair page.
Samsung: 5C, 5E or SE
Samsung shows the same drain fault as 5C, 5E or SE depending on the model and display. The usual causes are a clogged filter, a kinked hose or a blocked sink connection, followed by a jammed drain pump. See our Samsung dishwasher repair page for other common Samsung codes.
Whirlpool
Whirlpool does not use a single drain code across its range. Depending on the model, a drain fault may appear as an F-code, a flashing light sequence, or a cycle that stops with water in the tub. Check the code table in your user manual, or see the codes we handle most often on our Whirlpool dishwasher repair page.
Why dishwasher drain problems are common in Dubai
Hard water and limescale. Many Dubai homes see white limescale on taps, kettles and glassware. The same minerals deposit on the dishwasher's filter, sump, pump and check valve. Most dishwashers have a built-in softener that relies on dishwasher salt and a correct water hardness setting; if the salt runs out or the setting is too low, scale builds up much faster.
Heavy daily use. Family households often run the dishwasher every day, sometimes twice. Rice, oil, ghee and rich sauces leave starchy, greasy residue that binds with scale. In apartments, the washing machine and sink often share the same trap, which adds to the load.
Long summer breaks. When a household travels for the summer, water left in the sump goes stagnant and residue in the filter dries hard. Clean the filter before you leave and run an empty rinse cycle when you return.
A few habits prevent most drain problems: scrape plates rather than pre-rinse them, clean the filter every week or two, keep the salt and rinse aid topped up, and run a dishwasher cleaner monthly. For a professional descale and drain-path clean, see our dishwasher maintenance service.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal to have some water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?
A small amount of clean water in the sump, below the filter, is normal on many dishwashers because it keeps the seals from drying out. Dirty water sitting above the filter or across the base of the tub after a cycle is not normal and means the machine is not draining properly.
Can I use a drain cleaner or caustic unblocker in my dishwasher?
No. Caustic drain unblockers can damage the rubber seals, plastic parts and pump inside a dishwasher. Clean the filter by hand, clear the sink trap separately, and use only cleaners made specifically for dishwashers.
How do I clear an E24 error on a Bosch or Siemens dishwasher?
Switch off the power, clean the filter, check the drain hose for kinks and make sure the sink trap is clear. Once the blockage is removed, many models clear the code when you cancel the program and start a new one; your user manual lists the exact steps. If E24 or E25 keeps returning, the drain pump or check valve needs testing by a technician.
Why does my dishwasher drain and then fill back up with dirty water?
Water that returns after draining usually points to a stuck check valve (non-return valve), a drain hose without a high loop, or a blocked sink trap that pushes waste water back into the machine. Raise the hose to the underside of the worktop and clear the sink trap first. If the problem continues, the check valve needs to be inspected.
How often should I clean my dishwasher filter in Dubai?
If you run the dishwasher daily, rinse the filter every one to two weeks. Hard water and greasy cooking residue build up quickly in Dubai homes, so pair filter cleaning with a monthly dishwasher cleaner and keep the salt reservoir topped up.
Do you repair dishwashers that are not draining across Dubai?
