Bosch and Siemens Dishwasher E25 Error in Dubai: Clearing a Blocked Drain Pump
E25 on a Bosch or Siemens dishwasher means the drain pump is blocked or the pump cover is not seated correctly. Something, often a piece of glass, a seed or a label, is stopping the pump's impeller from turning freely, or the cover over the pump has come loose.
Unlike most drain problems, E25 points straight at one spot in the machine. In many cases you can clear it yourself by removing the pump cover and taking out whatever is caught underneath. This guide shows how to do that safely and how to tell when the pump itself has failed.
What E25 means and how it differs from E24
Both codes leave dirty water in the tub, but they point to different places. E24 means the drain path is restricted: filters, hose or sink connection. E25 means the restriction is at the pump: the impeller is jammed, or the cover that sits over it is loose. Because a clogged filter lets debris through to the pump, the two often go together, so it is worth cleaning the filters while you are in there.
The code system is shared by Bosch and Siemens, so the steps below apply to both brands. Models without a display show faults as an indicator-light pattern instead, and the layout of the sump varies between model generations, so keep your user manual to hand.
Where the pump cover is
Lift out the filters in the centre of the tub floor and you will see a well, the sump. To one side of it, on most Bosch and Siemens models, is a small plastic cover, often white, with a tab or lip. Underneath it sits the drain pump impeller: a small plastic wheel with vanes that spins to push water out. The cover is not decoration. Behind it is the pump's non-return valve, so it must be clipped back in firmly after cleaning, or the machine will show E25 again.
How to remove the pump cover safely
- Switch off the power and close the water supply. Then remove the lower basket.
- Take out the filters. Turn the cylindrical filter anticlockwise and lift it out with the flat fine filter. See our E24 guide for cleaning them properly.
- Empty the sump. Scoop out the remaining water with a small cup and soak up the rest with a sponge, so you can see what you are doing.
- Release the cover. On many models the manual describes using the handle of a spoon: hook it under the cover's tab and lever gently upwards until the cover clicks loose, then lift it out by the tab. The release method varies by model, so follow the diagram in your manual rather than forcing it.
- Inspect the impeller. Look into the opening and remove anything caught around the impeller with your gloved fingers or tweezers. With gloves on, turn the impeller gently. On many of these pumps it feels slightly notchy or turns in small steps; that is normal for this type of pump motor. What you are checking for is anything that stops it moving, or broken vanes.
- Refit the cover. Put the cover back in position and press down until it clicks into place. If it does not lock, it is not seated correctly, and a loose cover on its own is enough to cause E25.
- Reassemble and test. Refit the filters, restore the water and power, and run a short program. The tub should be empty at the end.
What usually jams the pump
The filter catches most debris, but small, hard or sharp items get past a loose or damaged filter, or slip in while the filter is out for cleaning. The usual finds are:
- Shards from a broken glass, often from a breakage weeks earlier.
- Fruit stones and seeds, especially date stones, olive stones and lemon pips.
- Small bones from meat and fish dishes.
- Paper labels that washed off jars and containers.
- Toothpicks, cocktail sticks and bits of foil.
- Hard-water scale that has flaked off and collected with grease in the sump.
When the pump has failed
If the impeller turns freely, the cover clicks in properly, the filters are clean and E25 still comes back, the pump itself or its supply is the likely problem. Signs include:
- A hum during the drain phase with no water leaving, even with nothing blocking the impeller.
- An impeller with cracked or missing vanes, or one that wobbles badly on its shaft.
- No sound at all from the pump when it should be draining, which can also point to wiring or the control board.
- A burning smell. Switch off immediately and do not run the machine again until it has been checked.
Diagnosing which of these it is means testing the pump motor and its connections from underneath the machine. Replacing the pump means opening the base, so it is a technician job. Our Bosch dishwasher repair and Siemens dishwasher repair technicians diagnose E25 at your home.
Preventing E25
Scrape plates before loading, and pick out seeds and stones. After any breakage, take out the filters and check the sump for glass. Make sure the filter always locks fully into place, and clean it every week or two if you run the machine daily. For drain problems on other brands, or standing water without a code, see our dishwasher not draining guide. If you see E15, that is a leak into the base tray rather than a blockage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fix an E25 error myself?
In many cases, yes. If debris is jamming the drain pump or the cover is loose, you can remove the pump cover with the power off, clear the debris and refit the cover until it clicks. If E25 returns with a clear impeller and a secure cover, the pump probably needs replacing by a technician.
What is under the pump cover in a Bosch dishwasher?
The drain pump impeller, a small plastic wheel with vanes that pushes water out of the machine. The cover also houses the non-return valve, which stops dirty water from flowing back in, so it must be clipped back in firmly after cleaning.
The pump impeller feels notchy when I turn it. Is it broken?
Not necessarily. On many Bosch and Siemens drain pumps, the impeller turns in small steps or with slight resistance when moved by hand, which is normal for that type of motor. Cracked vanes, a badly wobbling impeller or something stopping it moving completely are the real warning signs.
Why did E25 appear right after I cleaned the filter?
The most common reason is that the pump cover was disturbed and is no longer clipped in, or debris dropped into the sump while the filter was out. Remove the filters, check the sump, and press the pump cover down until it clicks.
How do I know if my dishwasher drain pump needs replacing?
If E25 keeps returning with a clean filter, a clear impeller and a correctly fitted cover, or the pump hums without draining, grinds, stays silent or smells of burning, it needs testing. A technician can confirm whether the pump, its wiring or the control board is at fault.
