Bosch and Siemens Dishwasher E24 Error in Dubai: Drain Blockage Causes and Fixes

Published Updated By Dishwasher Experts Dubai

E24 on a Bosch or Siemens dishwasher means the machine could not pump its water out properly because the drain is blocked or restricted. The usual causes are clogged filters, a kinked or blocked drain hose, or a blocked or still-capped connection under the sink.

The good news is that E24 is one of the codes owners can most often fix themselves. Work through the steps below in order, starting with the filters, since they are the quickest to check and the most common culprit.

What E24 means

During every program the dishwasher pumps used water out through the drain hose into your sink plumbing. If the water is not emptied as expected, the machine stops and shows E24, normally with dirty water left in the bottom of the tub. Bosch and Siemens share the same code system, so the advice here applies to both brands. On models without a display, the same fault appears as an indicator-light pattern that varies by model; your user manual explains it.

The key difference from its neighbour code: E24 points to a restriction along the drain path (filter, hose, sink), while E25 points to a blockage at the drain pump itself. The fixes overlap, so if you are not sure, start here.

Common causes of E24

  • Clogged filters. Food, grease and labels build up in the filter system at the bottom of the tub and slow the flow of water to the pump.
  • A kinked drain hose. This often happens when the machine is pushed back into its cabinet after cleaning, moving or installation.
  • A blocked hose. Grease and food sludge can build up inside the hose, especially near the sink end.
  • A capped or blocked sink connection. On a new installation, the plastic blanking cap on the sink trap spigot may not have been removed. On older installations, the trap itself fills with grease.
  • A drain pump problem. Less often, the pump is jammed or failing. That is covered at the end of this guide.

How to clean the filters

  1. Switch off the power. Then open the door and pull out the lower basket.
  2. Remove standing water. Lay towels on the floor and scoop out the water with a cup, then soak up the rest with a sponge.
  3. Take out the filter system. On Bosch and Siemens machines it sits in the centre of the tub floor. Turn the cylindrical filter anticlockwise and lift it out together with the flat fine filter. Depending on the model, the parts can be separated further for cleaning; your manual shows how.
  4. Rinse every part. Hold each part under warm running water and scrub gently with a soft brush. Pay attention to the fine mesh, where grease forms a film you can feel more easily than see. Avoid wire brushes and sharp tools.
  5. Check the sump. With the filters out, look into the well underneath and remove any debris you can see. If you can see the pump cover and something is lodged around it, follow our E25 pump cover guide.
  6. Refit the filters. Seat the flat filter flat in the tub floor, insert the cylinder and turn it clockwise until it locks. On many models, marks on the filter line up when it is correctly fitted. A loosely fitted filter lets debris bypass it.

Check the drain hose and sink connection

If the filters were clean, or cleaning them did not help, move on to the drain path.

  1. Inspect the hose under the sink. Look for kinks, flattened sections or a hose trapped behind the bin or cleaning supplies. On a freestanding machine you can ease it forward to check behind it. A built-in dishwasher has to be released from the cabinet to see the full hose run, so leave that to a technician if you are not comfortable doing it.
  2. Check the hose height. The hose should rise to the underside of the worktop before dropping to the sink connection. This high loop stops dirty sink water from running back into the machine.
  3. Test the sink. Run the kitchen tap for a minute. If the sink drains slowly or gurgles, the trap is partly blocked and the dishwasher is pushing against it. Put a bucket underneath, unscrew the trap, clean it and refit it hand-tight. In many Dubai apartments the washing machine drains into the same trap, which makes grease and lint build-up more likely.
  4. On a new installation, check the spigot. If the dishwasher has never drained properly, disconnect the hose at the sink and check that the blanking cap inside the spigot was cut or removed.

Reset and test

Once the blockage is cleared, restore the power. On many Bosch and Siemens models you can cancel the interrupted program by pressing and holding Start for about three seconds; the machine then pumps out. The exact reset steps vary by model, so check your manual if that does not work. Then run a short or rinse program and watch it: the tub should be empty at the end with no code.

When the drain pump is the cause

If the filters are clean, the hose is clear, the sink drains freely and E24 still comes back, the problem is likely at the pump. Listen during the drain phase:

  • A hum with no water moving usually means the pump impeller is jammed. That is often something you can clear yourself using the steps in our E25 guide.
  • Silence where you would expect the pump to run can mean a failed pump motor, a wiring fault or a control issue.
  • A grinding or rattling noise suggests debris in the pump or a damaged impeller.

Testing a pump motor, its wiring and its supply from the control board needs a meter and access to the base of the machine. That is the point to book a technician through our Bosch dishwasher repair or Siemens dishwasher repair service.

Why E24 is so common in Dubai kitchens

Daily runs, rice, cooking oil and ghee leave starchy, greasy residue that clings to the fine filter, and hard-water scale binds with it into a stubborn film. Rinsing the filters every week or two and keeping the dishwasher salt topped up prevents most repeat E24s. Our general guide to a dishwasher not draining goes deeper on prevention and on other brands. If the code persists, our technicians can visit the same day where available. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fix an E24 error myself?

Often, yes. Most E24 errors come from clogged filters, a kinked drain hose or a blocked sink connection, and all three can be checked safely at home with the power off. If the code persists after those checks, the drain pump probably needs a technician.

What is the difference between E24 and E25 on a Bosch dishwasher?

E24 means the drain path is restricted, typically at the filters, drain hose or sink connection. E25 means the drain pump itself is blocked or its cover is not seated correctly. Both leave water in the tub, so cleaning the filters is a sensible first step for either.

How do I reset a Bosch or Siemens dishwasher after E24?

Clear the blockage first, then restore the power. On many models, pressing and holding Start for about three seconds cancels the program and pumps out the water. The exact reset method varies by model, so check your user manual if that does not work.

Why does E24 keep coming back after I clean the filter?

Either the restriction is further along the drain path, in the hose or the sink trap, or the drain pump is jammed or weak. Check the hose for kinks and test the sink drain. If both are clear, inspect the pump cover or book a technician to test the pump.
